Sam Youkilis’ mesmerising short videos capture the delirious experience of international tourism. Hanging out at marketplaces, beaches, and intersections, watching intently, he focuses in on the movements of hands and bodies. Closing in on his subjects, removing them from their context, he elevates specific places to simple formal arrangements of colour and line – this is travel photography, but this could be almost anywhere.
Youkilis was born and grew up in New York. In 2016 he was awarded a BFA in photography by Bard College. He’s featured his work on The New Yorker’s Instagram accounts, Ain’t-Bad, and Ignant. At the time of writing, he’s staying in Italy.
