Photobooks, selected by Laurence Vecten

Artist: Ali Bosworth
Title: Kyklades
Publisher: Gottlund Verlag
Year: 2010
BUY

It’s one of the very few books we brought back from our Californian trip last month. We found it “par hasard”, at the MOCA’s great bookstore. It’s been sold out for a long time. First of all, I love Ali Bosworth’s pictures and because of the cold weather we’re having in Paris this year, these beautiful sunny holidays pictures are warming our evenings. The book is also another example of the great work Nicholas Gottlund is publishing.

Artist: Noah Beil
Title: Gone Quickly
Publisher: Self published
Year: 2011
BUY

This book is not new but we visited Noah recently while in San Francisco. When we arrived back in Paris, I needed a fresh look at his book. The light and the pictures are sharp, and very personal. Most of us wouldn’t pay attention to the details seen and captured by Noah. The book is an amazing object : printed and bound by the artist, letterpress, etc…

Artist: Mark Steinmetz
Title: Summertime
Publisher: Nazraeli
Year: 2011
BUY

Another summer story, I guess. I’m very sensitive to the portraits of American teenagers and Steinmetz captures like no other.

Artist: Mike Brodie
Title: A Portrait of Juvenile Prosperity
Publisher: Twin Palms
Year: 2013
BUY

These pictures are just fascinating.

Artist: Edward Newton
Title: This time next year
Publisher: Self published (Highchair Editions)
Year: 2013
BUY

I have discovered the publishing work of Edward and James Newton last year. The 2 brothers publish their own works through Highchair. They produce simple home made books with a very British style. They’ve released 5 books to date and are working on new titles. My favorite is “This time next year”. I’m certainly caught by the use of wallpaper.
