Koji Onaka’s complex yet casual photographs brim with melancholic longing. A follow-up and companion piece to Onaka’s Slow Boat (Sokyu Sha, 2003/Schaden, 2008), Twin Boat offers a loose narrative of adolescent love. The book begins with a postcard image of a young woman holding a flower and quickly leads us out into the Japanese countryside and along the back-roads of small towns. Throughout the book, pairs of kids, cars, trains or drying kimonos suggest the fleeting, but omnipresent theme of coupling, both accidental and intentional. Like the titular boat, Koji moves gently through the world and captures scenes of fleeting beauty.
