Born and raised in Curacao, Gilleam Trapenberg has come to see the island as one of paradoxes, where “the cliche of macho-culture exists alongside strong, independent women and pink-coloured skies.” His photo series Big Papi, “is a visual research into the image culture of masculinity set against a sunset lit Caribbean landscape. A time of day in which borders are less defined.”
Trapenberg received his bachelor’s degree in photography from the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague. His work has been published in Paper Journal 01, W magazine, i-D magazine, and It’s Nice That, among others. Exhibitions of his work have taken place at La Cite, Paris; UNFAIR, Amsterdam; and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. He currently lives and works in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
